April brought us not only interesting weather, it brought us our latest meeting of the Santa Cruz Woodturners Association. This meeting brought new faces which is always exciting. After the club news and new members and guests were introduced, the presidents challenge and show and tell were shown. Once again our members did not disappoint. There are some amazing artists presenting here. Though we have many seasoned members as well as newer turners, the quality of work is always incredible.
The demo for the day was a baby rattle presented by our very own Maarten Meerman, president. He started with a single small spindle of 1 3/4″ to allow the finished product to safely be turned down to the the finish3ed size. A baby rattle MUST not be made smaller than 1 1/4″ so the baby will not choke on it.
He turned down the outside to shape and allowed for enough to make a lid for the box. He cut the top off and began hollowing out the interior. He used the lid as a measuring tool to now where to cut the interior. He put a penny inside the box as the rattle component and put the top on. He finished the turning of the rattle handle with a wide end to prevent choking.
